Johannesburg
AWOL Tours facilitates visits to a number
of interesting, exciting
locations of both historical and political importance in this vibrant
region of South Africa.
Archaeology
excursions are organised to the Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Caves in
Kromdraai ,
known as the birthplace of the human race, where early hominoid species
were discovered.
The ‘Cradle of Humankind’ is a World Heritage Site first named by
UNESCO in 1999. It is located approximately 50 kilometres northwest of
Johannesburg, in the Gauteng province. This site contains a complex of
limestone caves, including the Sterkfontein Caves, where the
2.3-million year-old fossil Australopithecus africanus (nicknamed "Mrs.
Ples") was found in 1947 by Dr Robert Broom and John Robinson. Enjoy a
guided tour back in time, accompanied by an archaeologist.
Political Science and History Tours
offer visitors and learners an
invaluable opportunity to get a real feel for life in the times of
apartheid and democracy in the new South Africa. You will be afforded
the opportunity to meet many fascinating South Africans in an informal
and personal way and hear the fascinating and diverse personal
experiences of people who lived in the apartheid era — many of whom
were political activists.
Take a tour through the rich, dramatic history of South Africa — from
the earliest inhabitants through to colonisation, the discovery of
diamonds and the Anglo Boer war, right up to the first democratic
elections in 1994. Visits to Soweto Township where Nelson Mandela
lived, Lilyleaf Farm which was the headquarters of ‘Umkhonto we Sizwe’
(the military wing of the ANC) and the Apartheid Museum are included.
Please contact us if you wish to immerse yourself in the history and
