In addition to our various hiking tours offered, AWOL Tours now offers a unique optional extra – hiking with guide dogs in Cape Town. Dogs can be the best company, as they will motivate you, inspire you and with no doubt keep you on your feet.

George Eliot, a famous novelist once said “Animals are such agreeable friends – they ask no questions; they pass no criticisms.”  This is so true for when you’re hiking, because when you hike, your intention should be to fully immerse yourself in nature. There is something very unique about animals, even more so is to explore the outdoors with them. They are by nature adventure seekers, always excited and eager to discover new places.

We recently had our first guest booking this optional extra and just did a hike up Table Mountain with a guide dog. Here is what she had to say.

What made you decide to hike with dogs?

“I am a dog lover. I grew up with a chocolate lab named Cobi and constantly surrounded by dogs in LA, whether be at my dog friendly office or dog sitting friends pups. I also live by Runyon Canyon in LA and love seeing everyone’s dogs on the path.  When I go home to Washington state and hike with friends there, we almost always take multiple pups with us and they make the hike so much more entertaining and fun. Also, they give you something else to think about or pay attention to especially on harder parts of any hike. When doing Table Mountain, it was nice to have them lead so you could see a good path to take. Also, it was pretty steep and hot at times so it was nice having them around to keep you going and calm.”

Would you recommend it to others?

“100%. If you love dogs and even if you don’t, they really bring added value to the overall experience.”

Your thoughts on the experience?

“Loved the hike, Dashka was am amazing guide and of course, Luke, Ewok and Remy were all lovely. The dogs were all super sweet with different personalities. Also, they all have different strengths and weaknesses, so it feels more like a team effort getting up and down together. Plus they check in on you to make sure you are ok which is really sweet. I will definitely be booking again when I return. I really want to do the level three challenging course with the pups! Now that I know how great they are on the trail, I’m more confident that they will be great companions and guides on that particular route.”
