Cape Malay cooking tour in Bo-Kaap
Walk through the colourful Bo-Kaap, experiencing history, cultural and culinary delights as you prepare a meal and dine in a traditional Cape Malay kitchen.
Our AWOL guide will meet you in front of the Bo-kaap Museum. On request, our guide can collect you from your Cape Town accommodation and drive you to start the tour (optional extra), at a time that suits you for a private guided Cape Malay cooking tour. (Approx 3-4 hours including meal preparation and dining)The Bo-Kaap is famed for its quaint colorful houses. Bishop Tutu’s Rainbow Nation originated in this historical neighborhood, which has a cultural diversity that ranges from southeast Asia to North West Africa and Europe. The best way to experience the the Bo-Kaap is to taste Malay food. It is a culinary experience that will change the way you think of food forever.
On the tour, we walk through the Bo-Kaap including a visit to one or two local shops (subject to opening times) and then we were invited to participate in preparing, cooking, and eating in a local Cape Malay family kitchen. Our host chef will teach us to roll rotis, fry chili bites, cook curry, and wrap samoosas. Suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Learning to cook together is a fun way to bond with friends whilst experiencing something new in this cultural culinary experience. The cooking class always ends with an intimate lunch or dinner in the home of the local home. A typical class last 2,5hrs including the meal and includes dessert and tea. We look forward to sharing the tastes and sights of the colorful Bo Kaap with you. We can offer the tours in English, Dutch, German, and French, on request.
