Zizipho Silwana (better known as Zizi) grew up in Masiphumelele and is gaining valuable work experience at her first job as a Tour Consultant for AWOL Tours at the offices in the V&A Waterfront Tourism Information Centre.

She passed her matric in 2010 at Masiphumelele High School, where she met Masicorp and applied for financial assistance. In 2012 she started her first year at CPUT studying towards a National Diploma in Human Resource Management. With financial assistance and mentoring from Masicorp, Zizi managed to finish her course in record time in 2014.

Her work at AWOL Tours is quite a different role from HR, but her love for tourism and Cape Town attractions inspired her to join the AWOL Tours family. She also works part time for an online women’s magazine where a number of articles has been published in her name

AWOL Tours donates 10% of the turnover to Masicorp. All the more reason to be enthusiastic about this job more so because she knows that the tours she sells will help others in Masiphumelele with education and funding.

Clearly Zizi has more interests than just her Qualifications. She says “I believe passion can take me places and I am always open to learning new things outside my comfort zone. I guess that’s why I’ve chosen to juggle writing with tourism. They may be opposite to what I studied for, but I still do them with passion. After all not every great skill has to be learnt from behind a desk, but HR is my first love so I will still pursue the field in future.”

Zizi hopes to further her studies next year, and will enroll for a short course in creative writing later this year.

Her optimistic and hardworking characteristics have proven that with the right attitude, financial assistance from Masicorp and work experience at AWOL anyone can rise beyond their limitations.
