Mountain Biking Tours in the Cape Winelands

Discover the beautiful Cape Winelands with many incredible off the beaten track with your personalised guide. You can choose between a leisurely bike ride or a moderate to difficult mountain bike ride, the Winelands has something to offer for every fitness level. 

Early morning before the heat of the day, our experienced mountain biking guides will meet guests at their accommodation in Cape Town and depart to the Winelands, with a choice of many beautiful hidden valleys situated halfway between Cape Town and the Klein Drakenstein and Wemmershoek mountains to the north, and the Groot Drakenstein and Franschhoek mountains to the south mountains of the Western Cape.

Full day Mountain biking tours from Cape Town:

1.Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve & Rhebokskloof single track trials.
14km & 18km single track plus endless Jeep track The Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, with its giant granite boulders dating back more than 500 million years, provides a spectacular backdrop to this enjoyable MTB ride. Leisure cruising on good dirt roads with a gentle gradient makes this trail suitable for the whole family. More technical challenges of either 14km or 18km on superb single track on Rhebokskloof Wine Estate can be included for the fit rider with some great climbs and views. Read blog

2. Stellenbosch Jonkershoek
10km to 40km off road Mountain biking in this commercial forest eventually gives way to pristine Cape Fynbos as you pedal around the 10km beginners gravel mountain biking trail. More technical challenges on superb single track with some great climbs up to 800m to the ‘neverending story’ or ‘Fire trails’ offers fantastic views of the rugged peaks of the Hottentots Holland Mountains.

3.Bottelary Hills
The Bottelary Hills MTB trails in the Bottelary Hills Conservancy traverse privately owned land and offer scenic natural beauty and incredible views of the Winelands, Table Mountain and False Bay. There is one main route with various loops of different levels of difficulty connected to it. The routes comprise of jeep track, technical switchbacks and fast-flowing singletrails. Although most of the trails are not too technical, some steep climbs and switchbacks will test your legs and skills. Check out the video of the route

4.Elgin Valley
The Elgin Valley Mountain Bike trails are a combination of the trails at Oak Valley and Paul Cluver wine estates. The trails form part of the Wines2Whales multi-day stage race every year and also often host a stage of the world famous Cape Epic. There are various routes from 14km for beginners to 75km with more than 1000m of ascend for fit riders. The singletracks are well-maintained and consist of bridges over farm fences, flowing berms and switchbacks through pine and oak forests, rolling fields of grass pastures, apple and pear orchards and natural fynbos. Two of the highlights are the Mamba rollercoaster and the Pofadder bridge.

5.Grabouw A-2-Z Trails
This relatively new trail in the Grabouw Forest and Cape Pine plantations consists of 26 sections of pure singletrack joy. From the entrance gate we climb up to the start of the Gantouw Pass. Once on section A, there is hardly any jeep track and singletrail junkies will absolutely enjoy themselves. The total length of the circular route is 36km and includes some interesting features like wooden bridges crossing over streams, berms, and wooden structures over and between rocks. Get ready for some short but brutish climbs, hair-raising rocky downshills, sandy switchbacks and tree roots in the forest. For fit riders we can add on an extension for a brutal climb (on tar road) up to Hansekop for spectacular views over Cape Town and beyond. 6.Welvanpas Bains MTB Trails Wellington
This is a jewel amongst all the mountain biking trails in the Cape. There are four different route options from 15km moderate to 30km advanced that can also be combined to a challenging 56km route with some serious climbing. Good fitness and skill levels are required to ride the varied terrain of rocky jeep track, steep singletrack descents and steep rocky climbs but also easier fast-flowing singletrack. Welvanpas offers the mountain biker a stunning scenery of pristine fynbos, vineyards, orchards and the majestic Hawekwa Mountains in the background. Check out the video of the route
