Fitted with new cycling shirts our AWOL guides went out to explore new cycling routes in the Constantia Wine Valley to prepare for a busy summer season that lies ahead. Now we have an perfected Constantia Winelands Cycling Tour and offer our guests a little bit more off-road experience with a taste of nature, culture and of course winetasting.
We depart from Groot Constantia, the oldest wine estate in South Africa that was originally granted to Governor Simon van der Stel in 1685. Before being kitted out with bicycles we have an opportunity to visit the original Manor House to marvel at the Cape Dutch furniture typical of 18th century.
From Groot Constantia, we start cycling downhill towards the Constantia greenbelt after just a few minutes of cycling on tar road. The Constantia Greenbelt is perfect for beginner mountain bikers as there are no technically difficult sections or steep inclines.
After a loop around Lower Tokai Forest we learned more about the delicious wines at Constantia Uitsig. A new winemaker is now working his magic with the recent purchase of property by a South African businessman Pieter Erasmus. Unfortunately La Colombe (a regular in the Eat Out Top 10 awards) has moved, but new restaurant ‘Open Door’ is getting good reviews. Exciting news is that the Bike Park is opened, so if our guests are keen to test their technical skills before heading to the tasting room.
From Constantia Uitsig we pedal to the other original parts of the Constantia farm: Another tasting is arranged at Klein Constantia, renowned for its award winning wines. Last year they participated in the Wine Spectator’s Critics Choice Grand tasting in New York in recognition for producing one of the world’s greatest wines! Our final stop is at the AWOL guides favorite estate, Buitenverwachting for lunch and much needed coffee at the ‘Coffee BloC’
Beautiful mountain views paired with a little bit of exercise and world-renowned wine makes for the perfect summer holiday tour in Cape Town. Our guides have fresh knowledge and local stories about the area and would love to share this great cycling and wine tour with you. Our mountain bikes are ready to go, our guides are well prepared, and the wine farmers are looking forward to hosting our guests.
The rate per person for a private Constantia cycling tour is R1400 (based on two people travelling) and includes transfer, rental of a 29er hardtail MTB and helmet, wine tastings and cycling guide. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org for group rates, more information or book here
