There’s a moment most safari travellers know well.
You’ve had a few days in a private reserve, predawn game drives, dust, silence, the absolute privilege of watching Africa’s animals live their lives at close range. It has been, without question, one of the most extraordinary experiences of your life.
And then it’s over. And you’re flying to Cape Town with five days left in South Africa, and part of you is wondering: what could possibly follow that?
The answer, in our experience, is the Garden Route.
Why July and August Are the Best Months for Safari
Before we talk about what comes after, let’s talk about why now is the moment to go.
July and August fall in the heart of the Southern African dry season, and for game viewing, this is about as good as it gets. The bush has thinned out as the grasses die back, which means visibility is extraordinary. Animals concentrate around waterholes, because the seasonal rivers and pans have dried up and permanent water sources become the centre of activity.
It’s also cold in the mornings. Properly cold. The kind where your breath steams above your coffee on an open game drive vehicle as you watch the elephants come to drink, and the silence before a lion sighting is so absolute that you hold your breath without deciding to.
This is what dry season means experientially. Not just “better visibility”, though that’s true. It’s the quality of the air. The way the light falls. The concentration and intensity of the wildlife encounters.
What Comes Next
Safari immerses you in stillness, anticipation, and observation. But after several days in the vehicle, many travellers arrive in Cape Town wanting to move again… to walk, climb, and reconnect physically with the landscape.
This is where the Garden Route and the Cape Peninsula become such a powerful complement to safari and where AWOL’s active experiences complete the journey.

Two guests enjoying the beautiful Garden Route.
Cycling the Garden Route
Our multi-day Garden Route cycling tour is designed for exactly this kind of traveller. You move through the landscape at human pace, along coastal paths, through indigenous forests, past lagoons and beaches that feel utterly remote. You earn the view.
The route takes in the stretch between George and Storms River, with time in Wilderness, Knysna, and the Tsitsikamma National Park, each one distinct in character, all of them extraordinary in July when the winter light is low and the tourist numbers are a fraction of summer.
The Cape Peninsula on Foot or Wheel
If the Garden Route isn’t in your itinerary, the Cape Peninsula itself offers some of the finest active touring in the world. Our Cape Point cycle tour covers one of the most dramatic coastal routes on the continent, from Cape Town to the southern tip of Africa and back, with time at Boulders Beach with the penguins and magnificence of the Cape of Good Hope.

Cycling the Winelands
For those who want something gentler in pace but no less beautiful, our Winelands cycling tours offer a different kind of reward. You roll through the vine rows of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek on quiet back roads, stopping at estates that have been making wine here for three centuries.
Taste the Culture
The most memorable journeys are the ones where you don’t just see a place, you taste it, cook in it, and leave knowing something about the people who call it home.
We build Cape Town experiences that go beyond sightseeing. Think an afternoon in the Bo-Kaap learning the spices and stories behind Cape Malay cooking. Or a cooking experience in a local community kitchen, sitting around a table with the person who grew up making the food, hearing the stories that never make it onto a menu.
What We Do Differently
AWOL has been guiding active tours since 2002. We’re a small, specialist operation, which means when you cycle or hike with us, you’re with a guide who genuinely knows this landscape. Someone who can tell you about the fynbos you’re riding through, the history of the communities you pass, the bird call that just stopped you in your tracks.

We build bespoke, fully curated itineraries: not packages pulled from a catalogue, but journeys designed around what you actually want to experience, which is why AWOL has consistently held a TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award.
A safari followed by a cycling tour on the Garden Route, or a week of hiking and cycling around the Cape Peninsula, is one of the most complete ways to experience South Africa. Active and contemplative. Wild and cultural. Moving and still.
