Every year on 9 August, South Africa marks Women’s Day, a public holiday that honours the courage, strength, and resilience of women who have shaped the country’s history. At AWOL Tours, we’re proud to say that strong, inspiring women continue to shape our story too, both on the frontlines and behind the scenes.

Why We Celebrate Women’s Day in South Africa

Women’s Day commemorates the historic march on 9 August 1956, when over 20,000 women of all races marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria. Their protest was against apartheid pass laws that restricted the freedom of movement for Black South Africans.

These women stood united, singing the now-famous words: “Wathint’ Abafazi, Wathint’ Imbokodo”—“You strike a woman, you strike a rock.” This phrase has come to symbolise the strength and resilience of South African women, then and now.

Keeping things running smoothly is no small feat. Megan ensures that every detail is handled with precision, care, and the kind of behind-the-scenes brilliance that makes each guest experience seamless. From when you first reach out to the end of your holiday, they’ll be with you every step of the way.
