Sometimes, the smallest gestures create the biggest ripple effects. This is certainly true in the story of Lutho, whose journey to an AWOL Tour guide is nothing short of inspiring.

Twenty years ago, AWOL Tours donated three bicycles through the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) as prizes for a poetry competition at Ukhanyo Primary School in Masiphumelele. One of winners of the competition, was Lutho, who was 11 years old then. At the time, it was a simple prize for creativity. But for Lutho, it became so much more. He recalls that winning the bicycle gave him immense joy and confidence. Suddenly, the quiet kid at school was the center of attention. Friends and classmates wanted to ride his bike and hear his poetry.

Lutho, far right, with his newly won bicycle.

Years later, Lutho applied for a job as a cycling tour guide at AWOL Tours. When asked why he wanted the position, he spoke passionately about how his love for bicycles had begun as a child. What he didn’t realise was that sitting across from him was Sally, AWOL’s founder, and the very person who had donated the bicycle that had changed his life. In that moment, Sally recognized the incredible serendipty of it all.

“I feel amazed that a simple bicycle donation could make such a difference in someone’s life,” Sally says.

Today, Lutho shares his story with visitors on the Cultural Township Tour, showing the township through the eyes of someone whose life was changed by a small act of community support. His journey is a living testament to the power of generosity, opportunity, and the unexpected ways life comes full circle.
